Countin' Out My Pennies at Wegmans

I was really, really nervous walking into Wegmans for this shopping trip. I only had $65 in my wallet for Wegmans. Since we've been doing the cash envelopes, there are no more impulse purchases at the grocery store. It makes me kind of sad. Wegmans has some really amazing stuff. What tempted me today? Whole vanilla beans and organic ice cream.  Had I indulged in these impulses I would have been out over $15.  I'll have to try again next week. Although it could be argued (rationalized?) that life is just not worth living without ice cream.

Maybe everyone already knows this and I am late to the game -- but I had to buy several spices this week for an Indian dish I hope to make tomorrow. I found that many spices were much, much less expensive in the International Foods aisle than they were in the regular baking aisle.

For example, whole cinnamon sticks cost $5.99 in the baking aisle, but they were only $2.69 next to the Mexican section. I also found ground ginger in a 7 oz bag for $3.49 with the Indian spices; in the baking aisle it was $4.39 for less than 1 ounce.  That's not extreme couponing -- that's a no-brainer!

That doesn't mean I shopped without coupons. Here are my best coupon deals:

Luna Bars -- $.99 each, free with $.50 off coupon (no longer available)
Simply Organic Spices -- $1 off with this coupon
Jasmati Rice -- $2.25 off with coupon (no longer available)
Wegmans Organic Frozen Vegetables -- $1 off using a coupon I found (no kidding!) in the parking lot. Some people bend down for change on the ground, I pick up coupons!

Ultimately, I didn't have to break out the debit card. I was able to stay under my $65 budget, although I paid for $1.36 of it in change.  So yeah, that's me. I'm that lady who is picking up stray pieces of paper in the parking lot and scrounging through her change purse to pay for groceries.  Should I feel bad? I don't think so.

Wegmans Savings Round-Up!

I went to Wegmans this week knowing I had already spent $11 at BJ's Wholesale Club (on Pita Chips and Pirate's Booty, of all things!), and $26 at Aldi.  So from my $80 budgeted weekly for groceries, that only left $43 for my Wegmans trip.  That is not a lot, considering I had a long list that included lots of fruits and vegetables (I am missing my CSA share already!).

Thankfully, I remembered I had $12 left over from the previous two weeks' shopping trips. Still, $55 is not a lot, and I went $8 over.  While I'm not thrilled about that, I'm cutting myself some slack.  We're still only in the first month of using cash envelopes for groceries.
I feel good about the fact that I was really thoughtful about what went in my cart, and got only necessities for my family:
And yes, that bag of chocolate in the front is most certainly a necessity! I didn't have a coupon for it, but it was on Shopper's Club. :)
Here are the highlights of my trip:
  • 2 Clif Kids Z-bars -- Free with this coupon
  • YoBaby Meals 4-pack -- $.99 each with Mambo Sprouts coupon (no longer available)
  • NY State Gala Apples -- $.89/lb
  • French's Mustard -- $.69 with coupon from their website
  • Kikkoman Panko Bread Crumbs -- $.99 with $1/1 coupon (no longer available)
Total Before Savings: $87.98
Total Saved: $24.90
Total Out of Pocket: $63.08
Percentage Saved: 28%

Oh, Aldi, How I've Missed You!

I got lazy over the summer, and in an attempt to consolidate my food shopping, went exclusively to Wegmans, and supplemented with whatever came in our CSA share. Now that the school year's back in session, and easy lunches need to be made or brought every day, I need to be a little less lax, and for some items, Aldi is definitely the more cost-effective choice.

For example, my husband brings a ham and cheese wrap with pretzels to work every.single.day during the school year.  I can buy all the ingredients for his lunch for less than it would cost to purchase comparable items at Wegmans.

According to the above list, I will save $4.81 by shopping at Aldi only for my husband's lunches; not including anything else that I can find there.  For more information about Aldi/Wegmans comparisons, check this post

Here's what I actually bought this week:

Yeah, we go through a lot of cheese. It's pretty much the only thing my 20-month-old will eat, so we have shredded cheese, string cheese, sliced cheese, and block cheese. So, yeah. Lots of cheese.  I was also excited to see Nature's Path organic granola bars for only $2.39 a box. I love when I find random organic items for deep discounts at Aldi's -- don't forget to check the special bargain bin!

Total Spent: $26.49

How to Get the Most from Consignment Sales: Shopping Follow-Up

Last week, in anticipation of consignment sale season, I wrote two posts on how to make the most of your consignment sale experience, whether you are buying, selling, or both.

I had the opportunity to do both recently at Weepeats consignment event which is local to me here in upstate NY, and I'm really excited about my finds so I wanted to share them!

All in all, I spent $97 shopping at the sale's "Preview Day."  Preview Day is when consigners who have worked a volunteer shift are able to shop before the general public.  I got some amazing deals, with an average of $4.40 per item.
What you see above includes:
  • A Land's End Dinosaur Halloween costume -- $14
  • Stride Rite girls sneakers -- $2
  • Stride Rite Mary Janes -- $2
  • Girls' Polaris winter boots - $5
  • Girls' London Fog Winter coat with fleece hat - $6
  • Girls' Janie & Jack pink cashmere sweater dress - $6
  • Assorted books, coloring books, and sticker books - $1-$2 (I stock up on these for when the kids are bored and need a new activity or for car rides)
  • Little People Doll House with all accessories --$9 (not pictured; I put it away because it's going to be a Christmas present!)
  • Little People Excavator Set -- $4 (also not pictured because it's going to be a Christmas present)
All in all, I'm very happy with the quality and selection of items I was able to find. I wish I had found a boy's jacket and boots, but I'm realizing it's hard to find quality secondhand items for pre-school boys -- they are just so hard on their clothes!

As a consigner, I'm also pleased with how I did. About 95% of the items I brought sold.  All except maybe 10 of those items sold in the first 3 days of the sale. I'm so glad I wrote "Discount" on all my items -- indicating that I will let them go for half price on the last day -- because I certainly didn't want to take those items home again with me.

Overall, buying and selling at a large consignment sale was a great experience, and I know I'll do it again in the spring. I have one beef that I need to get off my chest though; this is a personal pet peeve, but I wonder if other people feel the same way.

I can't stand it when sellers overprice their items, and then refuse to let them be discounted on half price day. Case in point: I saw a bike very similar to this one at the sale:

This bike is currently on Target's website for $44.99, brand new. How much did this particular seller ask for a similar used bike? $45 -- and no discount. When I went to pick up my stuff when the sale ended, I saw the seller lugging this bike -- unsold -- home with her. I just don't get it. Isn't the point of selling your stuff to get rid of it??? I mean, I understand that we all want to make some extra cash, but I would much rather have $22.50 in my pocket and more space in my garage than $0 and another item to store.

Is this just me? I'd love to hear what others have to say about the consignment sale experience. I know you have stories!!

Wegmans Trip: Much Ado about Not Much

This week's shopping trip to Wegmans was a trifecta of foibles: I went right at dinner time, I had both kids with me, and we were all hungry and cranky.  Not a good combo!  Plus, when I got there, I realized I didn't bring my coupons for some of the items I had planned on getting.

This seemed like a disaster of epic proportions.  It meant that I would have to bring both children back to the grocery store at some point this week. Vowing not to do that, I got just what I needed, and got out of there. I wish I could say that I did it without being short with my children, but I can't.  Lesson learned: next time, I'll either find time to go by myself, or I'll just roll with the punches a little better!  Because frankly, I don't think I was adding to the situation much -- my tense and annoyed energy wasn't helping M and E behave better, that's for sure.

I wasn't paying as much attention as I usually do to prices during my trip -- I was just trying to grab and go -- but I was happily surprised at the register when my final total was only $61.80. Here's the breakdown:
Organic Nectarines -- $2.49/lb, Paid $5.45
Final Price: $4.45 for about 2 lbs.

Wegmans Naan Bread (for make your own pizza night), 2 @ $2.99 each
Used $1/2 coupon from Fall Menu Magazine
Final Price= $2.50/each

YoBaby 4-pack -- $2.49
Final Price= $.99

YoToddler 4-pack -- $2.49
Used $1/1 (obtained in a coupon trade)
Final Price = $1.49

Top Care Children's Acetaminophen -- $2.49 on Shopper's Club
Final Price = $.49

Total Before Coupons = $75.17
Total Coupons and Shopper's Club Discounts = $13.37
Final Out of Pocket = $61.80
Percentage Saved= 18%

This was a pretty low out of pocket trip, but I also spent $12 at Aldi this week, mostly on cheese. :) That still brings my spending to about $74. With the $6 I have left over from last week, I now have $12 saved to put towards a trip to the health food store later this month.

Shopping at Wegmans: Alone and Under Budget

I finally got to go shopping by myself the other night.  I love my family, but it's SO much easier to shop when they're not with me. I had a pretty long list, and I was planning on going to Aldi for some of the staples, but they were closed for the holiday weekend!  I ended up just getting everything at Wegmans because I didn't know if I would have time later in the week to pick up the rest of my list.  It was so big, I had to take 2 pictures!
I mostly stayed on list, and I did stay under my $80 budget by $6.25! I was hoping to have a little more left over because I'm planning to do some shopping at the natural foods store next week, plus, we are running low on meat.

The deals and coupon highlights are as follows:

  • Philadelphia Cooking Creme -- 2 @ $1.19 using $.75/1 coupon (no longer available)
  • Luigi's Italian Ice -- 2 @ $2 each using Shopper's Club and $1/2 from 8/14 RP

Wegmans Trip!

This was a tricky week for grocery shopping.  At the beginning of August, my husband and I decided to use cash envelopes for variable expenses such as food.   Our grocery shopping budget is $325, or $80/week. Here's how we're doing so far:

Week One: $39.99 at Wegmans -- $40 left over
Week Two: $54 at Wegmans -- $25 left over
Week Three: $77.44 at Wegmans -- $2.50 left over

Budget for this week: $147.50 ($80+ $67.50 left over from previous weeks)

What threw a wrench into my couponing this week is that I knew I had to go to BJ's as well, and it seems like any time I shop there it is at least $100. Plus, I was shopping with my whole family, which is typically a recipe for overspending.  Even though I managed to only spend $71.22 at BJ's this week, I knew I needed to be careful at Wegmans.

Here's what I bought:

Silk Soy Milk - $2.39 after $1/1 coupon (or get a $.75/1 coupon here)

Wegmans' Whole Milk -- $2.19

YoToddler Yogurt -- $1.49 after $1/1 coupon (find a $.50/1 coupon here)

Wegmans Burrito Tortillas -- $.99 with this coupon

Barilla Piccolini (2) -- $.89 each with coupon from 8/28 RP

Wegmans Training Pants -- $8.49

Wegmans Tuna -- 2@$.79 each

Wegmans Organic Raisins -- $3.99

Top Care Acetominophan -- $.50 with $2.00/1 Wegmans Coupon (located in pharmacy dept)

Sensodyne Toothpaste -- $2.79 after Wegmans Coupon (Summer Savings Booklet) and tearpad manufacturer coupon I found at the dentist's office.

2 pounds of nectarines -- $1.98

Club Pack Diapers -- $4.99 after Shopper's Club and $8/1 coupon from Wegmans Summer Savings Booklet

Total Before Coupons and Discounts - $52.17
Amount Saved = $18.29
Total Cost out of Pocket= $33.88 which means I still have some stock-up money to carry over for next month!
Total Percentage Saved = 35%

All in all, I spent $105.10 this week, which means I still have $42.40 left in my cash envelope to carry over for next month!

BJ's Wholesale Club: August/September Shopping Trip

I don't think I've ever spent less than $100 at BJ's since I became a member. I was determined to really reign in my spending this week even though I wanted to get a few things at BJ's this week.  With tax, I ended up spending $71.22 after coupons, which I was happy about.

What I was less enthused about is that the trip consisted mostly of processed snack foods.  While my husband and I prepare healthy, whole foods at mealtimes, looking at the photo of this shopping trip made me realize I haven't been as mindful as I could be about the snack foods we eat.
See what I mean? Minus the grated parmesan and maybe the hummus, almost everything is a processed snack product.  If I'm being honest I will say that you are looking at a month's worth or more of snack foods -- we certainly don't go through this in one week. Still, looking at this picture is motivating me to be  more creative in terms of making homemade, less processed versions of these snack foods.  I'm open to ideas!

Here are the sale items I picked up:

Nutella, 26.5 oz (x2) -- $3.79 each using (2) $1/1 coupons ($1/1 from 8/28 RP and Printable no longer available). I bought 2 because this is a stock-up price; the 13 oz jar at Wegmans costs $3.99.

Annie's Cheddar Snack Mix, 20 oz -- $5.99 - $1/1 BJ's Coupon = $4.99

Stacy's Pita Chips, 24 oz -- $4.99 - $1.50/1 BJ's Coupon = $3.49

Dove Minis -- $9.99 - $2 BJ's Coupon = $7.99

Berkely & Jensen Trail Mix -- $9.99 - $2 BJ's Coupon = $7.99

Total Before Coupons =$80.72
Total Savings - $9.50
Total Out of Pocket = $71.22 (includes tax)
Percentage Saved = 12%

BJ's Wholesale Club: Deals for September

The September Coupon Book for BJ's Wholesale Club just came in the mail yesterday, and I was really excited to see that there are many store coupons that can be combined with manufacturer's coupons to make for some terrific deals.

Remember, you do have to be a BJ's Club Member to take advantage of these deals. If you're not a member, you can still shop with this One-Day Pass, but there will be a 15% surcharge levied on your purchases -- which sort of negates the savings, in my opinion.  Still, if you decide to sign up within 7 days of your purchase, you can have the 15% surcharge applied to your membership fee of $50/year.

Here are the best deals I've found at BJ's for the upcoming month:

Brita Pitcher, Faucet Mount, Replacement Filter Pack, or Brita Bottle
Use $7/1 from BJ's Savings Book

Land'o'Lakes Sliced Cheese
Use $1.50/1 in BJ's Savings Book
Use $1/1 printable here

Any Kashi Item

Wegmans Trip: Rocking the Budget

I have been under my $80 grocery budget several times in the past several weeks, and I can attribute my savings on a few specific actions:

  • Meal planning based on what's already in the pantry/freezer
  • Stocking up on staples at the rock-bottom price (we're still eating chicken I bought for $1.49/lb in May)
  • Participating in a CSA.  Yes, I know I am paying for this separately, but since we pay for (and budget for) that expense up front, it helps the weekly bills to stay low
  • Using coupons for almost everything  (check out Natural & Organic Coupons category in the sidebar for a partial list of available coupons)
Here's my trip for this week:
The highlights:

Silk Almond Milk -- $2.39 after using this coupon

Philadelphia Cooking Creme -- 2 @ $1.19 each after this coupon

Yobaby 4-pack -- FREE after Stonyfield Rewards Coupon

Rice Dream rice milk -- $1.49 after coupon (no longer available)

Nestle Dark Chocolate Morsels -- 2 @ $2.19 each after coupon from 8/21 SS

French's Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce -- 3 @ $.69 each after coupons in 8/21 SS

French's Worcestershire Sauce -- $.49 after coupon in 8/21 SS

Wegmans Traditional Feta -- $3.29 after coupon from Summer Menu Magazine

Ball Instant Pectin  -- FREE after this coupon from 6/21 SS insert

Final Stats:
Total retail value: $94.83
Amount Saved with coupons & Shopper's Club: $18.29
Amount Out of Pocket: $77.44

$2.56 under our $80/week budget!

Under $55 at Wegmans & Within Budget!

I posted yesterday about how my family is going to a cash envelope system for variable household expenses.  So when I went grocery shopping this week, I knew I had $80 for the week to spend -- and that is all.

I was really happy with this week's shopping trip because I stayed well within my budget, bought many organic and whole foods for my family, and still was able to buy a few treats.

Bananas - 2 lbs at $.49/lb

Driscoll's Strawberries -- $2.99 for 1 lb
Final Price $1.99

Local Nectarines -- $2.99/quart

Wegmans Soft Whole Wheat Bread -- 2 pk -- $2.99

Silk Almond Milk & Soy Milk -- $3.39 each
Used $1.25/1 and $1.00/1 (don't remember where I got these!)
Final Price= $2.14 & $2.39

YoToddler 4-pack -- $2.49
FREE after coupon from Healthy Child, Healthy World

YoBaby 4-pack -- $2.49
Used $1/1 Coupon from Healthy Child, Healthy World
Final Price -- $1.49

2 Organic Valley Whole Milk half gallons -- $3.99 each
Used 2 $1.00/1 coupons from Healthy Child, Healthy World
Final Price= $2.99 each

Polly-O String Cheese -- 24 oz -- $6.99 (This specific product is the lowest price per ounce for string cheese at the Eastway Wegmans)

Sabra Hummus, 17 oz -- $3.59  -- I was all out of the $1/1 coupons from 6/26 SS, but we love this brand!

Wegmans Low-Fat Vanilla Yogurt, 32 oz -- $1.99 -- we use this in our smoothies!

2 Luigi's Italian Ice -- $2.49/each on Shopper's Club
Used $1/2 from 8/14 RP
Final Price= $1.99/each

4 Boxes Wegmans Pasta -- $.79 each

1 Box Wegmans Orzo -- $1.19

2 Bags Stacy's Pita Chips -- $2.69 each -- The price is ridiculous, but I'm addicted, what can I say?

1 4-oz bag Pirate's Booty -- $2.79 (which I think is also ridiculously expensive, but my husband loves it so much he hides it from our kids)

Wegmans Shredded Pecorino-Parmesano Cheese -- $3.51

The key to this trip being so frugal is the fact that I did 90% of my menu planning from the pantry & CSA basket.  We mostly bought dairy products and bread, since the pantry is so well-stocked right now.  If I'm going to stick with cash envelopes for groceries, meal planning is a necessity.

And Just Like That, I'm Off the Wagon

Well this is embarrassing.

Here I am, running a blog primarily about saving money and being healthy, and I just completely blew my weekly budget at BJ’s Warehouse Club on (among other things) Toaster Strudels!
They have some crazy juju in that place that makes it impossible to leave without (in my case) about 20 boxes of cereal. Maybe it’s the piped in music -- today I heard Toto’s “Africa,”  and I was not the only one singing along. I was, however, the only one trying to harmonize in my admittedly poor falsetto. (Mason’s response? “Mommy, you’re going to have to stop that.”)
See?? I'm getting distracted by their music even now.

Before I disclose what I spent today, let me justify myself by saying that I have not grocery shopped in close to 2 weeks due to being in and out of town.  That excuse doesn’t hold up well, though, when you take into consideration my prodigious pantry and freezer stockpile. Also, we have no snack foods, like cheese, crackers, hummus, and yogurt, so we all definitely needed some nibbles. Finally, and this is totally a rookie mistake -- I was shopping on an empty stomach. By the end of the trip I was nearly faint with hunger and has to restrain myself from tearing into the $10 bag of trail mix (until I got in the car, that is.)

This is what the trip looked like -- there’s so much stuff I couldn’t even fit it on the table -- I had to use the floor. Please excuse the giant black puppy tush in the lower right hand corner -- our 90 pound black lab decided she was disgusted with my excess and wasn’t going to move for the picture.
Despite the self-flagellation I’m giving myself for this trip, I did, in fact, score some deals, and I did use coupons.
Final Cost= $186.78
Saved with Coupons: $30.49
